It never dawned on me that my ancestors lived long enough for them to know each other personally. Yes, living hundreds of years will cause many people’s lives to overlap each over. Imagine my surprise, looking in the Scripture for the death age of Shem, to see he lived 500 years AFTER the flood. He lived long enough to change Jacob nappies and watch him grow into a righteous young man. I didn’t find it in the current KJV, but in the Book of Jasher, Shem was a master grandpa!
Think the math off let’s look at the Scriptures
10 These are the generations of Shem: Shem was an hundred years old, and begat Arphaxad two years after the flood:
11 And Shem lived after he begat Arphaxad five hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.
12 And Arphaxad lived five and thirty years, and begat Salah:
13 And Arphaxad lived after he begat Salah four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters.
14 And Salah lived thirty years, and begat Eber:
15 And Salah lived after he begat Eber four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters.
16 And Eber lived four and thirty years, and begat Peleg:
17 And Eber lived after he begat Peleg four hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters.
18 And Peleg lived thirty years, and begat Reu:
19 And Peleg lived after he begat Reu two hundred and nine years, and begat sons and daughters.
20 And Reu lived two and thirty years, and begat Serug:
21 And Reu lived after he begat Serug two hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters.
22 And Serug lived thirty years, and begat Nahor:
23 And Serug lived after he begat Nahor two hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.
24 And Nahor lived nine and twenty years, and begat Terah:
25 And Nahor lived after he begat Terah an hundred and nineteen years, and begat sons and daughters.
26 And Terah lived seventy years, and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
Genesis 21:5 And Abraham was an hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him.
Genesis 26:26 And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau’s heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.
Now to get to the meat of this meal. From the birth of Arphaxad to the birth of Abram is 290 years. From the birth of Abram, now know as Abraham, to the birth of Jacob is 160 years. Remember, Shem lived 500 years after the birth of Arphaxad (Genesis 11:11).
Terah was an idol worshiper and the most loyal servant of Nimrod. Amthelo gave birth to Abram when Terah was seventy years old and he great loved him. When Nimrod told him to present his beloved child so he could be murder, Terah hid him in a cave. When Abram was 10 years old, he went to live with and learn from Noah and Shem. Yes, Noah was still around when Abram walked the earth. He live with his grandpas for 39 years (Jasher 9:5-6). Shem was the expert and teacher of the Instructions, for even Abraham said Issac must learn from him (Jasher 23:5) and Issac was commanded to send Jacob to learn the Instructions by THE MOST HIGH (Jasher 28:18).
Shem was a master grandpa because he taught the progenitor of YAHUAH’S HOUSE OF ISRAEL. The Flood took away the evil on earth but through his seed, Shem gave birth to a bloodline of kings, prophets and priests who lives would be the history of a nation living for the one true Creator of all things.
Other notable long living grandpas can be seen in this beautiful chart I found on New 2 Torah website. Please don’t think Shem trumps all the other grandfathers because Lamech’s great-great-great-great-great-great-grandpapa was Adam and he knew what it was like living in Eden!
I have so much fun with Shem and learning out of the Book of Jasher. I am excited what I will learn next.
